Can I register for all my online classes on WebAdvisor? Top

If you are a current South Dakota Board of Regents student, you can register for your SDSU distance education courses through WebAdvisor.  If you are taking classes on campus as well as online, you must register for the on-campus internet course.  However, if you are only taking your classes online, you must register for the off-campus internet course.  The reason for this is that the Board of Regents has established different tuition rates which are dependent on if you are taking any classes on campus.

How do I know if I am enrolled in the course(s) that I requested? Top

You can check your class schedule through WebAdvisor which will show any courses in which you are enrolled for a particular semester.

If you are a new student and requested registration through our Distance Education website, you will be notified of the status of your request via the e-mail account you provided during your registration request.  Depending on your e-mail provider, it is possible for the message to end up in your Junk Mail folder, please be sure to check this.

Where do I login for my class? Top

Go to https://d2l.sdbor.edu/.  Enter your ID and Password on the login page.  Your courses will appear upon the first day of class as listed in WebAdvisor.

Where do I get a username for my online class? Top

Your Username will be the same as your WebAdvisor ID.  If you do not know this, you can get it through WebAdvisor by selecting "Students" and "What's my User ID?" or by going to the Board of Regents Identity System at https://boris.sdbor.edu/idm/ and select "What is my...email/username".

What is my password? Top

You will receive an e-mail (to your primary email address) notification with instructions to create your password.  You can also create your password by selecting "I'm New to D2L" from the D2L homepage

What do I do if I can’t login to my online class? Top

Call the SDSU Support Desk at 605-688-6776 and they can give you assistance.

Where can I get information about the online class I am considering? Top

You can course information by going to http://distance.sdstate.edu/CoursesNew.cfm and clicking on the course name.

When I login to my class it tells me I need an access code.  What is this and where do I get one? Top

Some instructors use a course provided by the publisher called an e-pack.  The publisher requires students to use an access code to enter the course.  The access code can be purchased through the bookstore or from the publisher directly.  The Office of Distance Education does not handle or control access codes; this is controlled by the instructor of the course.  If you have questions concerning an access code, please contact the instructor.

What software do I need for my online classes? Top

All classes are different.  Most do not require any special software.  However, you may be taking a class which requires you to view PowerPoint presentations, or possibly short videos.  The instructor will list any software requirements in the course syllabus.  Most instructors post their syllabus on the course listing page on this site.  You can view this information by going to http://distance.sdstate.edu/CoursesNew.cfm and clicking on the course name.  If the instructor did not post the syllabus on the site, there will be contact information listed and you can contact the instructor directly.

I don’t have high speed internet access; can I still take an online class? Top

As with any web related site, it is always advisable to have a fast, secure connection.  A cable connection is better than DSL, DSL is better than Dial-up.  A Dial-up connection will be slow, and you should be prepared for that; some documents will just take time to fully download.  Some multi-media will not open at all (i.e. video files).  Since it is up to the instructor as to what type of files will be used in any given course, it is always a good idea to know where you could access a computer with a faster connection if needed.  This could be a local library, school, or other public facility.  If you do have problems with your connection speed accessing materials for your course, email your instructor as soon as possible and explain the situation.

Do I need any special settings on my computer? Top

Set your firewall settings to medium, and disable any pop-up blockers on your firewall.  If you don’t know how to do this, call the helpdesk at 605-688-6776.

Do online classes require you to have text books? Top

Yes.  An online class is the same as an on campus class.  See the course syllabus, or check with the instructor to verify what text you will need and have it before the class starts.  You can order your text from the bookstore at http://www.sdstatebookstore.com

How often do I need to login to my online class? Top

Again, this will vary with the individual class.  You should spend as much time in your online class as you would an on campus class.  A good rule of thumb is to login to your class every other day; at a minimum twice a week.

How do I take online exams? Top

The program used for our online classes has a quiz/exam tool which will allow you to take your exams online.  Read the instructions carefully, as most exams and quizzes are timed.  If you run out of time, you may not answer the questions you have not finished and they will count against you.  Some instructors require you to have the exam proctored.  If this is the case, see the examination proctor guidelines at http://distance.sdstate.edu/proctor.htm

What if I need to speak to my instructor? Top

The instructor will generally address this in the course syllabus.  At a minimum, there will be communication tools placed in the course to be used for student-instructor communication.

How do I turn homework in? Top

Similar to the quiz/exam tool, the program uses a Dropbox tool used to upload files (your homework) to the instructor.  Get familiar with this tool early on in the course!  For more information check out the Desire2Learn Tutorials.

Do I need to come to campus during the semester? Top

This is totally up to the instructor and if required, dates and times will be listed in the syllabus.

How do I drop a course that I have been registered for? Top

You can drop a course in which you have been registered through WebAdvisor.  Select Drop Selections from the student menu.  You must drop a course prior to the add/drop date.  If you try to drop a course after this date, you will need to complete a petition form.  You can have this sent to you by contacting us at 605-688-4154 or 1-866-827-3198.

How do I tune in to my cable course? Top

If you're a resident of Brookings, Volga, Arlington, Lake Preston, DeSmet, Flandreau, Elkton, Egan, Aurora, and Colman, you may be able to take a university class by watching television (channel 2) in the comfort of your own home.
